Toshiya Motai paints pieces on the correlation between format and spirit, and in 2020 has resumed his “Coupling of Odds” series, which consists of odd numbers of panels, and was completed once in 1998.

The work, which titled “ta・KK・ei” throughout 1998, 2020, and the present, is based on the image of a the crucifix painted for the chapel in a treatment facility for patients with the plague; where it once looked at structural issues in 1998, it now focuses on our awareness toward the current pandemic. “ta・KK・ei”, having undergone a change in its interpretation in the meaning behind the crucifix and of the human form, and of the desire to paint and the purpose of the act, will be put on exhibit.

フォーマート ( 画面の縦横比・サイズ ) と精神性の相関をテーマに絵画制作する母袋俊也は、1998 年に一度完結させた奇数枚のパネルで構成する「奇数連結」シリーズを 2020年に再開しました。

1998年、2020年、そして本展と、同じく《ta・KK・ei》と題される作品は、ペスト患者用施術院の礼拝堂のために描かれたある磔刑図を基にしながら、主題よりも構造的な問題を捉えていた1998年に対して再開後は昨今の感染症への問題意識から主題の方に力点が置かれていると話します。磔刑図や人体の意味について、また絵を描く衝動や役割についても考えながら新たに解釈し直した《ta・KK・ei》を展示いたします。
