“The Place of Appearance” is, for the artist, a place where a picture appears, where there is a slight overlay of the real world (Real) and another world (Idea). Toshiya Motai has previously attempted to direct interest toward pictures that exist in such a place through installation. The monotype print consists of one transcribed image achieved from pressing paper to an aluminum plate. Howeverm this manner of applying pressure to bring forth an image is, for the artist, reminiscent of the “Shroud of Turin,” the burial cloth believed to bear the printed form of the crucified Jesus Christ. Motai says that the shroud has made him think about the place of pictures and where they appear.

母袋俊也の版画展を開催いたします。今回は《現出の場》をめぐるポートフォリオと《mt21「もう一つの世界」に回り込んで》と題されたモノタイプ版画を展覧いたします。
《現出の場》とは、作家が考える、現実世界(Real)ともう一つの世界(Idea)がわずかに重なり合う絵画の現れる場所のことであり、そこに位置する絵画への関心はこれまでもインスタレーション等で試みられてきました。またモノタイプ版画とは、描画したアルミ板等の上に紙を乗せプレスすることで像を転写する１点ものの版画ですが、この圧をかけることで描いた像が現れるという仕組みもまた、作家には十字架に処せられたイエスの遺体を包んだ布にその姿が浮かび上がったとされる「トリノの聖骸布」を思い起こさせ、それがつまり絵画の位置やその現れる場所について考えさせられると話します。
ギャラリー空間では２種類の版画作品の展示とともに《現出の場》を想起させるインスタレーションも試みられます。ぜひご高覧下さい。
