“The world must be made from within” – these words, spoken by Eisaku Ando, are reflected in the simple carved forms of this exhibit, allowing one to see the sculptures resulting from the life energy from within coming to the surface. Ando carves their sculptures as one would chop a tree with a hand axe; the countless fine yet powerful pieces of bark are also a distinct characteristic of Ando.

Take this opportunity to peruse the sculptures that display the Ando that came to be after studying the art for years, all the while experiencing the 3.11 disaster and life during the evacuation, the new life that followed, and being award with the 28th Hirakushi Denchu Award in 2017 and the 10th Enku award at the Enku Grand Awards in 2019.

Ces mots d’Eisaku ANDO se retrouvent dans les formes simples de cette exposition. Ces sculptures sont une expression de l’énergie de la vie qui s’agite sous la surface.

Ando sculpte comme on coupe un arbre : à la hache. Chaque nouvelle marque à la surface de la sculpture participe à créer une nouvelle écorce qui est typique de ses oeuvres.

Cette expression est l’aboutissement d’un long apprentissage de l’art et de son expérience du Grand Tremblement de Terre du Tohoku qui l’a forcé à évacuer et refaire sa vie ailleurs.

Il a récemment reçu le 28ème Prix Hirakushi Denchu (2017) et le 10ème Prix Enku lors du Grand Prix Enku en 2019.

「世界は内側から作っていかなければいけない」という安藤榮作の言葉どおり、本展ではじっくり刻み出したシンプルなフォルム、それは内側でうごめく生命エネルギーが表面まで辿り着き結果としてかたちとなって表れた彫刻、を展覧いたします。安藤は手斧で木を叩くように刻んで彫刻していきますが、無数に刻み込まれた繊細で同時に力強い木肌も安藤独特のものです。

長らく彫刻に向き合い、3.11の震災とそれに伴う避難生活、新たな地での生活と制作、そして2017年の第28回平櫛田中賞受賞、さらに2019年の第10回円空大賞・円空賞受賞を経た安藤の今あらわす彫刻をぜひご高覧ください。
