Tetsuji Seta’s practice centers on planting collected botanical specimens and engraving them with dates and events; in his signature two-layered works, he seeks to relate multiple timelines by presenting them in parallel. Since around 2024, he has begun incorporating antique coins into his work, intersecting the lives and histories of people from centuries or millennia past with the present day and his own existence. Engraved with modest moments of daily life rather than formal memories or records, Seta’s medals exude a sense of lightness and freedom, their organic forms fitting naturally within the palm of the hand.

採取した植物を植え付け、その日付、出来事等を刻印し、また代表的な二層構造の作品では複数の時を並行させつつ関係づける試みをしてきた瀬田哲司。2024年頃からは蒐めた古いコインを作品に持ち込むようになり、時に何百年、何千年前からの時間や人々の営みと現在や自身の存在等を交差させています。堅苦しい記憶や記録ではない日常のささやかな瞬間を刻んだ瀬田のメダルは、手のひらに収まる有機的なかたちとも相まって軽やかで自由な存在感に溢れています。
