Seishu Niihira has created paintings by layering motifs, working with “noise,” such as multiple timelines, spatial distortion, and fragmentation, as a key concept. He has also shaped his own reality by blurring binary oppositions like male and female.

This exhibition presents “Ghost Paint”, a series that further develops “Phantom Paint”, which the artist began last year. In these works, he moves between the realms of AI and humanity to contemplate the nature of “consciousness,” “the soul,” and “authorship.”

Ghost Paint: A series that builds upon its predecessor, “Phantom Paint”. The “Phantom Paint” series consists of paintings based on images created with the “GAN” image-generation technology; to produce these source images, the artist fed numerous portraits into the AI and then deliberately interrupted its learning process. In “Ghost Paint”, these incomplete and distorted images are then layered further to create ambiguous forms that are not immediately recognizable.

新平誠洙は複数の時間軸や空間の歪み、分裂といった「ノイズ」をキーワードに、モチーフを重ねる方法で絵画制作してきました。また男 / 女といった二項対立を曖昧な状態にすることでも自身のリアリティを生み出してきました。今回は昨年から始めた新シリーズ「Phantom Paint」をさらに発展させた「Ghost Paint」にて、AI / 人間の垣根を行き来しながら「意識」や「魂」「作者」についても考える作品、展示になります。TAGA 2では4年ぶりとなる個展、ぜひご高覧ください。

「Ghost Paint」：画像生成技術「GAN」に大量の肖像画を読み込ませつつ途中で学習をやめさせて生成されたイメージを絵画化した「Phantom Paint」、「Ghost Paint」ではその不完全で歪んだ画像をさらに重ねて図像化し一見何かわからない曖昧な存在を作り出しています。
