For the first time in 3 years, Izuru Kasahara will have an exhibition at GALLERY TAGA 2.

Around 1995, he began to examine “laughter,” the behavior itself, its meaning, and even the very existence, and expressed in his work many complicated layers of laughter. Around 2006, he then produced continually a series of drawings in which he drew “laughing spirits” floating in a landscape with a lotus pond, as seen at shrines and temples, where people have believed the real world encountered the ‘other side’.

In this exhibit, ‘laughing spirits’ drift amongst famous works that mirror Utsushiyo, as we are invited into the middle realm between Utsushiyo and Tokoyo (see below). In addition, the venue will be a joint collaboration with illumination creator Taira Ichikawa.Please feel free to take a look.

Tokoyo: The forever unchanging sanctuary. It is believed to exist in the world after death and in the underworld. This is one of two critical world views in Japanese mythology and Shintoism.  The other is ‘Utsushiyo.’

Fluffy Limbo: A fluffy and uncertain state/place, without ever landing, suspended in limbo.

笠原出のGALLERY TAGA 2では3年ぶりとなる展覧会を開催いたします。笠原は1995年頃から「笑い」そのものの意味や行為、またそこから派生する存在について問いつづけ、「笑い」のもつ複雑な層を表現しています。2006年頃からは、神社仏閣等の現世と常世(※)の橋架けとなるような風景に「笑う精霊」がふわふわ点在する絵画作品を描き続けてきました。本展では現世に見立てた過去の名画に「笑う精霊」が漂い、現世と常世の中間領域に私たちを誘います。また会場は、特殊照明作家の市川平氏とコラボレーションした展示となります。是非ご高覧ください。

※ 常世(とこよ)：

永久に変わらない神域。死後の世界でもあり、黄泉もそこにあるとされる。日本神話や神道の重要な二律する世界観の一方。 もう一方は「現世(うつしよ)」。
